Estelle Interview

EstelleWe caught up with Grammy Award winning UK Hip Hop star Estelle to get her take on growing up in London, school life and her influences.

It's been a busy 12 months for Estelle. The international success of American Boy, her Grammy Award winning collaboration with Kayne West and the release of her album Shine on John Legends Home School record lable you'd be forgiven for thinking Estelle was American. Not so, this West London native was born and raised in Hammersmith so from one Londoner to another what we really wanted to know is what it was like growing up and going to school in the capital city.

questions

Q. What was school life like you?

It was cool. It was about an hour way so it was pretty far away from home. I was definitely one of the quite kids when I was there.

Q. Where you popular?

I was popular but I was still one of the quiet ones which was nice. I was never one of those kids who used to go about bragging about the latest trainers they had been bought that week. I was definitely an all-round kind of person because I used to talk to everybody.

Q. Did you do well at school?

I did, my mum was quite tough on the homework situation but my head was always in the clouds. I had this talent of just being able to listen to things and answer the questions. Everyone would be like: 'how did you know that?' but it was just a matter of common sense. I only ever bunked once and I got so scared that my mum would catch me that I went back to school by the end of the day.

Q. What was your favourite subject?

English. I had a really good teacher who was very creative. We would also combine the lessons with drama. I really enjoyed reading and I would also read outside of the lessons. It has definitely helped me with my writing and performing.

Q. What inspired you to get into music?

I have always done it and it would have been very hard for me not to have got involved with it.

Q. What would you say is the best part of your job?

Performing live - everything else is a real drag. Nothing beats the feeling of performing live.
